EMDR for Adolescents and Adults
Processing traumatic memory with a research-supported method
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is a scientifically supported method for working with trauma, anxiety, low mood, phobias and low self-esteem.
Traumatic experience, distressing memories from the past or sustained stress can affect mental health deeply. EMDR for adolescents and adults aims to reduce the hold that past experience has on present life.
\nThe method helps the brain process traumatic memories and integrate them in a healthier way, restoring the balance between emotion, thought and bodily response. During the process, and alongside specific eye movements or other bilateral stimulation, distressing memories are reprocessed so that a more workable perspective becomes possible.
\nIt is used in particular with childhood trauma, accidents, loss, separation, neglect, abuse, panic attacks and persistent anxiety.
How a Course of EMDR Works
Assessment and preparation
History taking, identifying target memories and building stabilisation and self-soothing resources first.
Reprocessing
Working through target memories with bilateral stimulation until the distress they carry reduces.
Integration
Installing a more adaptive belief, checking the body response and consolidating the gains.
